Chapter Nine

Jerry sat on a bench staring into the mist, hoping to see the little girl. The mist split into four, and suddenly, the known victims of the Hash Mark Killer were standing in front of him. Patti O’Conner peered at him with tear-brimmed eyes. Ashley Fabel glared at him with crossed arms. Rosie Freeman, who’d been cheerful the last time he’d seen her spirit, now glowered in his direction, the look sending chills up and down his spine. Rita Wadsworth wagged her finger at him. The intensity of their combined disdain had him taking a step back.

Jerry looked for Gunter. The dog was nowhere to be seen. Gunter, I need you! Several seconds went by, and still, the dog failed to appear.

Rita laughed a haunting laugh. “What’s the matter, Jerry? Scared?”

Actually, yes. Better not tell them that. “No.”

Instantly, Rita was directly in front of him, leaning over him. “You’d better be afraid. You don’t think you can break your promise to us and get away with it, do you?”

Jerry leaned back in the chair to get away from the spirit whose face was only inches from his. “What promise? I didn’t break any promise.”

She grabbed his jaw, her slender fingers holding it so he couldn’t look away. He watched as finger-length bruises appeared on her neck, then one after one, others appeared, showing the horrors that preceded her death. Rita kept a death grip on his jaw as she turned his head to see each of the other women, who now each showed the atrocities they’d suffered at the hands of their killer. “You promised to find the man who did this to us.”

Jerry tried to pull away, but her grip was too strong. Where is Gunter? The dog was supposed to protect him.

Rita laughed and pushed his head back so far, he nearly tipped backwards in his chair. She released him on another laugh, the sound just as wicked as the one before. “He’s gone.”

Gunter’s gone? That can’t be.

“Don’t be a fool. He ran off with the child you came here to find.”

Jerry realized she’d read his mind. “Get out of my head.”

“Too late. You didn’t block us, and now we are all in here learning all of your secrets. Feasting on your fears.” Rita moved forward. Ashley and Rosie moved up beside her, dragging a reluctant Patti along with them.

Patti’s tears fell against his cheek. She wiped them away with her hand. He tried to move away, but she kept brushing his cheek. A tear fell into Jerry’s ear, and she quickly wiped it away. Jerry brought his hand up, felt something furry, and knew Gunter had returned.

Jerry opened his eyes and saw the massive shepherd hovering over him. His head lowered as he snaked his tongue across Jerry’s face.

Only a dream. The relief was instant. Jerry dug his hands into the K-9’s fur, grateful the dog had not abandoned him. Gunter lapped at Jerry’s ear several more times before, feeling calmer, Jerry finally pushed the K-9’s head away.
